WELCOME!

Homemade maple espresso granola combines old-fashioned oats, toasted pecans, warm cinnamon, and just enough espresso to give every bite a rich, subtle coffee flavor. I’ll show you how to make golden, crunchy granola clusters with simple pantry ingredients, plus my favorite ways to serve, store, and share them.

A HOMEMADE GRANOLA WORTH KEEPING ON HAND

A good homemade granola recipe is one of those things that makes breakfast feel a little more intentional without adding much work to your morning. And once you realize how easy it is to make your own, it’s hard to go back to buying it.

My maple espresso granola starts with a familiar combination of rolled oats, pecans, almonds, and maple syrup. The addition of espresso gives it a little more depth, balancing the sweetness and complementing the toasted nuts without making it taste overwhelmingly like coffee.

It’s a recipe you’ll find yourself reaching for throughout the week, whether you’re adding a handful to Greek yogurt, topping a bowl of overnight oats, or enjoying it straight from the jar.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS RECIPE

SIMPLE PANTRY INGREDIENTS. You don’t need anything complicated to make a delicious homemade granola. Most of the ingredients are probably already in your kitchen.

A SUBTLE ESPRESSO FLAVOR. A small amount of finely ground espresso brings out the richness of the maple syrup and toasted nuts without overpowering them.

CRUNCHY CLUSTERS. Pressing the granola into an even layer and allowing it to cool completely before breaking it apart helps create those satisfying clusters. I also take it an extra step and keep mine in the fridge so it stays nice and crunchy!

EASY TO MAKE AHEAD. A batch or two gives you a convenient topping for breakfasts, snacks, and desserts throughout the week.

EASY TO CUSTOMIZE. Swap the nuts, adjust the espresso, or add your favorite mix-ins once the granola has cooled.

INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED

  • Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats (Regular or Gluten Free) : These provide the foundation of the granola and hold their texture during baking. I prefer rolled oats rather than quick oats for a heartier, crunchier result.
  • Pecans : Their naturally buttery flavor pairs beautifully with maple syrup and espresso. Chopping them into smaller pieces help distribute them throughout the granola.
  • Sliced Almonds : Add another layer of crunch and a slightly different toasted flavor.
  • Pumpkin Seeds : Provide additional texture and a little variety in every bite. These are optional, as I didn’t have them on hand when creating this recipe, but I wanted to include as they would be the perfect addition!
  • Butter, Butter Oil, or Coconut Oil : Helps coat the oats and encourages even browning. I especially love the flavor of butter oil here.
  • Pure Maple Syrup : Sweetens the granola and helps the ingredients hold together as they bake and cool.
  • Ground Cinnamon : Adds warmth without competing with the espresso.
  • Finely Ground Espresso : Gives the granola its distinctive coffee flavor. A little goes a long way.
  • Fine Sea Salt : Balances the sweetness and brings out the flavor of the toasted nuts.
  • Vanilla Extract : Rounds out the maple and espresso flavors.

EQUIPMENT

You only need a few basic kitchen tools :

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Small Bowl or Measuring Cup
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Spatula
  • Rimmed Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Airtight Storage Jar or Container

A rimmed baking sheet is especially helpful because it allows you to spread the granola into a thin, even layer without spilling any of the ingredients.

HOW TO MAKE MAPLE ESPRESSO GRANOLA

Making homemade granola is straightforward, but a few small details can make a noticeable difference in the final texture.

Step One : Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 325℉ and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. The lower baking temperature allows the oats and nuts to toast gradually without burning the maple syrup.

Step Two : Combine the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, chopped peans, sliced almonds, pumpkin seeds, cinnamon, espresso, and salt. Stir until the ingredients are evenly distributed so you get a little of everything in each bite

Step Three : Add the Wet Ingredients

In a separate small bowl, stir together the melted butter or butter oil, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Pour over the oat mixture and stir thoroughly, making sure all the dry ingredients are lightly coated.

Step Four : Spread and Bake

Transfer the mixture to your prepared baking sheet, spreading it into a thin, even layer. Use the back of a spatula to gently press the granola together. Bake for 20 – 25 minutes, rotating the baking sheet halfway through if your oven heats unevenly. Avoid stirring, as this can break apart the clusters before they have a chance to form. The granola is ready when the oats are lightly golden, the nuts smell toasted, and the edges are beginning to brown.

Step Five : Cool Completely

Remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the granola to cool completely without disturbing it. It may feel slightly soft when it first comes out of the oven, but it will become crisp as it cools. Once cool, break it into clusters of your preferred size.

TIPS FOR PERFECTLY CRUNCHY GRANOLA

Don’t overcrowd the baking sheet. Spreading the ingredients into an even layer encourages consistent browning. If you double the recipe, use two bakings if necessary rather than piling everything onto one.

Press the granola before baking. Gently compacting the mixture helps the oats and nuts stick together as the maple syrup heats.

Resist the urge to stir. Although many granola recipes recommend stirring halfway through baking, leaving this mixture undisturbed helps preserve larger clusters.

Watch the color, not just the clock. Ovens vary, and nuts can go from toasted to overdone quickly. Look for golden oats and lightly browned edges.

Let it cool completely. This may be the most important step. Breaking apart warm granola too early prevents the clusters from setting properly.

SUBSTITUTIONS AND VARIATIONS

One of the benefits of making granola at home is being able to adjust the ingredients to your preferences.

Use honey instead of maple syrup. Honey works as a one-to-one substitute. Just keep an eye on the granola during baking, as honey may brown more quickly.

Change the nuts. Walnuts are an excellent substitute for pecans, while chopped hazelnuts would pair particularly well with the espresso.

Make it dairy-free. Replace the melted butter with coconut oil or butter olive oil.

Skip the espresso. If you’re making granola for someone who doesn’t enjoy coffee, simply omit the espresso for a classic maple pecan version.

Add chocolate. Once the granola is completely cool, stir in a small handful of dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate.

Make it gluten-free. Use certified gluten-free rolled oats and verify that the remaining packaged ingredients meet your dietary needs.

WAYS TO SERVE MAPLE ESPRESSO GRANOLA

Granola is one of those ingredients I love having on hand because it works with so many different things.

A few of my favorite ways to enjoy it include :

  • Sprinkled over plain Greek yogurt with fresh banana slices
  • Added to a bowl of maple pecan overnight oats
  • Served with milk and fresh berries
  • Used as a crunchy topping for smoothie bowls
  • Sprinkled over apples with peanut butter
  • Paired with whipped mascarpone and homemade banana bread
  • Enjoyed by the handful as a little snack

For something a bit more special, try serving it over a thick slice of homemade banana bread with espresso whipped mascarpone. The combination of tender banana bread, creamy mascarpone, and crunchy granola makes a wonderful addition to a weekend brunch.

STORAGE TIPS

Allow the granola to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight glass jar or storage container.

Store it at room temperature in a cool, dry place for up to two weeks. Keeping moisture out of the container is important for maintaining its crunchy texture.

For longer storage, freeze completely cooled granola in an airtight, freezer-safe container for up to three months. Allow it to come to room temperature before serving.

I actually like keeping mine in the refrigerator so it stays crunchy!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I used brewed espresso instead of espresso powder?

I recommend finely ground espresso for this recipe because it provides concentrated coffee flavor without introducing additional moisture. Brewed espresso would change the ratio of wet to dry ingredients and may affect the final texture.

How do I make homemade granola form large clusters?

Make sure the oats are thoroughly coated in the maple syrup mixture, press everything together before baking, and avoid stirring. Most importantly, let the granola cool completely before breaking it apart.

Why isn’t my granola crunchy?

Granola often feels slightly soft when it first comes out of the oven. Give it time to cool completely before deciding whether it needs additional baking. If it’s still soft after cooling, it may need a few more minutes in the oven. Spread it back onto the baking sheet and bake briefly, watching closely to prevent burning.

Can I make this granola without nuts?

Yes. Replace the pecans and almonds with additional rolled oats or a combination of seeds. Keep the overall quantity of dry ingredients similar so the coating distributes evenly.

Does espresso granola contain caffeine?

Yes. Ground espresso contains caffeine, although the amount per serving depends on the product used and how much granola you eat. You can omit the espresso or use a decaffeinated version if you’d prefer to avoid caffeine.

Can I double this recipe?

Absolutely. Divide the mixture between two baking sheets if needed so the granola has enough room to toast evenly. Rotate the pans as needed and watch for even browning.

Can I use quick oats instead of rolled oats?

Rolled oats are my preference because they hold their shape and create a better texture. Quick oats are smaller and may produce a finer, less clustered granola.

A HOSTING TIP : MAKE BREAKFAST BEFORE YOUR GUESTS ARRIVE

One of my favorite ways to make overnight hosting easier is to prepare a few breakfast staples before guests arrive. Homemade granola is especially useful because it requires very little hands-on time and stores beautifully.

For an easy breakfast spread, set out a large bowl of Greek yogurt, fresh seasonal fruit, homemade granola, and a little honey. Guests can build their own bowls, and you’re free to enjoy the morning with them rather than spending it cooking.

You can also portion the granola into small glass jars, tie them with ribbon, and send them home as a thoughtful homemade gift. It’s simple and a lovely way to extend the hospitality beyond the table.

Description

A crunchy, small-batch homemade granola made with rolled oats, pecans, almonds, maple syrup, and a hint of espresso. Perfect for yogurt bowls, breakfast, or snacking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (90 g) old-fashioned rolled oats, regular or gluten-free
  • 1/2 cup (55g) chopped pecans
  • 1/4 cup (23 g) sliced almonds
  • 2 tablespoons (18 g) pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon finely ground espresso
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons (28 g) melted butter, butter oil, or coconut oil (melted)
  • 3 tablespoons (60 g) pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325℉. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine the oats, pecans, almonds, pumpkin seeds, cinnamon, espresso, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Mix the melted butter, maple syrup, and vanilla in a small bowl. Pour over the dry ingredients and stir until evenly coated.
  4. Spread onto the baking sheet in a thin, even layer. Press gently with a spatula to encourage clusters.
  5. Bake for 20 – 25 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through if necessary, without stirring. Remove when the oats are lightly golden and the edges begin to brown.
  6. Cool completely on the baking sheet before breaking into clusters. Store in an airtight container.

Notes

Let the granola cool completely for the best clusters. Honey can replace maple syrup in equal amounts, although it may brown more quickly. For a dairy-free version, use butter olive oil or coconut oil instead of melted butter. Use certified gluten-free oats if necessary.
