These Creamy Garlic Mashed Potatoes are silky, buttery, and a timeless side dish elevated with olive oil for depth and richness. Perfect for holidays, dinner parties, or whenever you want the ultimate comfort food.
Mashed potatoes are a staple, but when you layer in roasted garlic and olive oil, they become unforgettable. These creamy garlic mashed potatoes are everything you want in a side dish : velvety smooth, rich in flavor, and versatile enough to pair with almond any main course.
The combination of garlic simmered with the potatoes and finished with butter-infused and wild mushroom & sage olive oils creates a depth of flavor that feels both gourmet and comforting. Pair them with my Rosemary Dijon-Crusted Lamb Lollipops and Roasted Seasonal Vegetables for a complete menu that never fails to impress.
Cook the Potatoes & Garlic : Place potatoes and garlic cloves in a large pot, cover with salted water, and bring to a boil. Cook until fork-tender, approximately 15 – 20 minutes.
Drain & Mash : Drain potatoes and garlic well. Return them to the pot. Mash until smooth using a potato masher or hand mixer.
Add Flavor : Stir in warm milk, butter-infused olive oil, and wild mushroom & sage olive oil. Mix until creamy. Season with sea salt and cracked black pepper to your desired taste.
Adjust Consistency : If needed, add a splash of warm milk for a looser consistency or mash in extra olive oil for more richness.
HOSTING AND SERVING TIPS
For an elegant presentation, spoon the mashed potatoes into a serving bowl and drizzle lightly with olive oil.
Sprinkle with fresh herbs (parsley or chives) for color.
STORAGE & MAKE-AHEAD OPTIONS
Refrigerator : Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Reheating : Warm gently on the stovetop with a splash of milk to restore creaminess.
Make-Ahead : Prepare potatoes earlier in the day and keep warm in a slow cooker set to low (or in a warming drawer) until ready to serve.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I use a different type of potato?
Yes, russets work well; however, they produce a fluffier, less buttery texture than Yukon golds.
Can I make these dairy-free?
Absolutely. Swap the milk for unsweetened almond milk and add an extra drizzle of olive oil. Note that the consistency is not quite as buttery smooth (and can often get gummy) when using dairy-free milk, so you may have to adjust things a bit to reach your desired consistency.
Can I roast the garlic first for a deeper flavor?
Yes! Roasted garlic mashed potatoes will have a sweeter, more mellow flavor. Simply roast whole garlic bulbs at 400°F for 30 – 40 minutes, then mash into the potatoes.
How can I avoid gummy mashed potatoes?
Make sure to drain potatoes well and always add warm milk (not cold) to prevent a gluey texture.

Yukon golds create a buttery texture, but Russets can also be used.
For a gourmet touch, top with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil before serving.
