WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS RECIPE

There’s nothing like that first sip of coffee in the morning. Especially when you don’t even have to leave the house to feel like you’re in a cozy coffee shop. This Maple Cinnamon Shaken Espresso is my go-to when I want something that tastes indulgent but still fuels my day. It’s creamy, subtly sweet, and perfectly spiced. A homemade version of your favorite coffee shop drink, but made with better ingredients and no refined syrups.

I love using a scoop of vanilla protein to make it more satisfying (especially post-workout or mid-morning). The cinnamon adds warmth, while the maple syrup blends perfectly with the espresso for a naturally smooth finish. And the best part? It’s ready to enjoy in less than 5 minutes, no barista skills required.

INGREDIENTS

  • Espresso : Use a double shot for the best flavor. Cold brew concentrate or strong brewed coffee also works.
  • Whole Milk : Creates the creamy texture. Swap for a dairy-free alternative if preferred.
  • Vanilla Protein (Optional) : Adds a subtle flavor and boost of nutrition.
  • Pure Maple Syrup : Natural sweetness without refined sugar.
  • Ground Cinnamon : Warm spice that complements the espresso beautifully.

EQUIPMENT

  • Espresso Machine or Strong Coffee Maker
  • Cocktail Shaker or Jar with a Lid
  • Blender
  • Ice and a Glass

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Brew Espresso : Prepare a double shot of espresso.
  2. Shake it Up : Pour espresso over ice in a cocktail shaker and shake for 30 seconds until frothy and chilled.
  3. Blend the Creamer : In a blender, combine milk, protein powder, maple syrup, and cinnamon. Blend until smooth and slightly frothy.
  4. Assemble : Pour the shaken espresso (and ice) into a glass. Top with the maple-cinnamon creamer and stir to combine.
  5. Enjoy : Sip immediately for the ultimate smooth and cozy coffee experience.

TIPS FOR THE PERFECT SHAKEN ESPRESSO

  • Shake your espresso long enough to create a creamy froth – it’s what gives this drink it’s café-style texture. For me, this is about 30 seconds of shaking.
  • Use pure maple syrup (not pancake syrup) for the best flavor.
  • Try topping with a sprinkle of cinnamon for a beautiful finish.

STORAGE TIPS

This drink is best made fresh, but you can pre-blend the maple cinnamon creamer and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days. Shake before using and pour over freshly brewed espresso when ready.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I use cold brew instead of espresso?

Yes! Substitute 1/2 cup of strong cold brew for the double shot of espresso for a smoother, less intense flavor.

What if I don’t have a cocktail shaker?

Use a mason jar with a tight-fitting lid and shake well – it works just as effectively (this is what I personally use at home).

Can I make it hot instead of iced?

Absolutely. Skip the ice and simply whisk the ingredients together for a cozy hot version. If you do have a milk frother, you can froth to warm the milk, then whisk in the protein using a hand frother.

Does the protein powder change the texture?

Not at all. If blended properly, it makes the drink even creamier while adding a subtle vanilla note. That said, I can only speak for the protein powder that I personally use. There is a chance certain brands may not mix as well as others.

HOSTING TIPS

If you’re hosting brunch or a weekend breakfast, set up a simple DIY shaken espresso bar for guests. Offer espresso shots, milk options, and mix-ins like maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, or even seasonal spice blends so everyone can customize their drink. It’s interactive, fun, and feels like a coffeehouse experience at home. You can even batch-blend the maple cinnamon creamer ahead of time for easy pouring!
