WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS RECIPE

This recipe adds a creative twist to traditional barbecue. The addition of blueberry balsamic vinegar creates a depth of flavor that’s both slightly fruit and bold. It’s naturally gluten-free, refined sugar-free (when using honey or maple syrup), and made with just a handful of simple pantry staples.

It’s easy, versatile, and cooks in under 30 minutes, making it perfect for weeknight dinners or backyard cookouts.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup all natural honey or maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 3 tablespoons blueberry balsamic
  • 1 – 2 teaspoons sea salt

EQUIPMENT

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk for mixing
  • Glass jar or airtight container for storage

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Combine Ingredients : Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan over medium-high heat.
  2. Bring to a Light Boil : Whisk until smooth and let the mixture come to a light boil.
  3. Cook Low and Slow : Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Cool & Store : Remove from heat and allow to cool completely before storing or serving.

STORAGE TIPS

  • Refrigerator : Store in a sealed jar for up to 2 weeks.
  • Freezer : Pour into freezer-safe containers and freeze up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before use.
  • Reheat : Warm gently on the stove before serving.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I use fresh blueberries instead of blueberry balsamic?

Yes – you can simmer 1/4 cup fresh blueberries with the sauce; however, the flavor profile will not be exactly the same. Note that you will need to blend and strain after cooling to achieve a smooth texture.

Is this sauce gluten-free?

Yes, this recipe is naturally both gluten-free and dairy-free.

How spicy is this recipe?

This version is sweet and tangy, not spicy. You can add chili flakes or hot sauce for heat if desired; however, I have never made this way so I cannot speak to the final flavor profile.

What’s the best way to use blueberry barbecue sauce?

It’s fantastic on grilled chicken, pork tenderloin, ribs, pulled pork, or even as a dip for roasted potatoes.
