If you’re looking for a BBQ sauce that’s a little unexpected but packed with flavor, this blueberry barbecue sauce is it. Sweet from the honey, tangy from vinegar, and rich from balsamic, it’s the perfect balance of flavors that complement grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or even sandwiches.
This recipe adds a creative twist to traditional barbecue. The addition of blueberry balsamic vinegar creates a depth of flavor that’s both slightly fruit and bold. It’s naturally gluten-free, refined sugar-free (when using honey or maple syrup), and made with just a handful of simple pantry staples.
It’s easy, versatile, and cooks in under 30 minutes, making it perfect for weeknight dinners or backyard cookouts.
Combine Ingredients : Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan over medium-high heat.
Bring to a Light Boil : Whisk until smooth and let the mixture come to a light boil.

Cool & Store : Remove from heat and allow to cool completely before storing or serving.
STORAGE TIPS
Refrigerator : Store in a sealed jar for up to 2 weeks.
Freezer : Pour into freezer-safe containers and freeze up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before use.
Reheat : Warm gently on the stove before serving.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I use fresh blueberries instead of blueberry balsamic?
Yes – you can simmer 1/4 cup fresh blueberries with the sauce; however, the flavor profile will not be exactly the same. Note that you will need to blend and strain after cooling to achieve a smooth texture.
Is this sauce gluten-free?
Yes, this recipe is naturally both gluten-free and dairy-free.
How spicy is this recipe?
This version is sweet and tangy, not spicy. You can add chili flakes or hot sauce for heat if desired; however, I have never made this way so I cannot speak to the final flavor profile.
What’s the best way to use blueberry barbecue sauce?
It’s fantastic on grilled chicken, pork tenderloin, ribs, pulled pork, or even as a dip for roasted potatoes.
